Area Overview - Outer Banks
Experience the high wind-swept dunes that lured
Orville and Wilbur Wright to the beautiful Outer
Banks to test their flying machine. Rich in history
and natural beauty, the Outer Banks offers endless
entertainment and educational experiences for
children and adults, alike.
Within a few minutes’ drive, you can visit a historic lighthouse or see
the famous wild horses. Boating, fishing, golf, tennis, fitness centers, shops,
restaurants and movie theaters are also just minutes away. Be sure to keep a
lookout for dolphins; you may be lucky enough to catch a pod as they ride the
waves toward the shore. Fly a kite on the beach from one of a multitude of kite
shops in the area. Biking and rollerblading paths also abound nearby.
Drive an hour south and visit the Wright Museum, where you’ll learn about
the history of aviation. If you are daring, you can hang glide within yards of
where flying history was made. There are a number of amusement
parks, including
a water park, and you’ll even find a place for bungee jumping. Cross over
to the mainland and experience a nightly play about the Lost Colony of Roanoke
or visit one of the many outlet shops at the various malls there.
For world-class windsurfing, drive just a bit farther to Canadian
Hole on Hatteras Island, surpassed only by Maui on Hawaii or The Gorge in Oregon.
Continue farther south and catch the ferry to Ocracoke, a charming village listed
on the National Register of Historic Places and one of Blackbeard the Pirate’s
favorite haunts. The Outer Banks is also a well-known fisherman’s paradise.
Fish on the beach from one of the numerous public docks or charter a boat and
sail off for a day.
