Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue

Date: August 3,2017
Time: 7:00PM-10:PM
http://freemanstage.org/
Location: The Freeman Stage at Bayside 31750 LakeView Drive. Selbyville, DE 19975
Contact: 302-436-3015
Fees/Admission: $35-$60

Trombone Shorty’s new album opens with a dirge, but if you think the beloved bandleader, singer, songwriter and horn-blower born Troy Andrews came here to mourn, you got it all wrong. That bit of beautiful New Orleans soul —”Laveau Dirge No. 1,” named after one of the city’s most famous voodoo queens — shows off our host’s roots before “Parking Lot Symphony” branches out wildly, wonderfully, funkily across 12 diverse cuts. True to its title, this album contains multitudes of sound — from brass band blare and deep-groove funk, to bluesy beauty and hip-hop/pop swagger — and plenty of emotion all anchored, of course, by stellar playing and the idea that, even in the toughest of times, as Andrews says, “Music brings unity.”

In the last four years, Andrews banked his fifth White House gig; backed Macklemore and Madonna at the Grammys; played on albums by She & Him, Zac Brown, Dierks Bentley, and Mark Ronson; opened tours for Daryl Hall & John Oates and Red Hot Chili Peppers; appeared in Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highways documentary series; voiced the iconic sound of the adult characters in The Peanuts Movie; inherited the esteemed annual fest-closing set at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in the tradition of Crescent City greats like the Neville Brothers and Professor Longhair; and released “Trombone Shorty,” a children’s book about his life that was named a Caldecott Honor Book in 2016.

Adding to that legacy, his Blue Note Records debut “Parking Lot Symphony” finds Andrews teamed with Grammy-nominated producer Chris Seefried (Andra Day, Fitz and the Tantrums) and an unexpected array of cowriters and players including members of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Meters, Better Than Ezra, and Dumpstaphunk.

50th Anniversary Summer of Love – Songs from the Woodstock Generation

Date: August 4,2017

Location: The Freeman Stage at Bayside 31750 Lake View Drive Selbyville, DE 19975
Contact: 302-436-3015
Fees/Admission: $25

The Summer of Love Concert is a concert experience that has audiences reliving the memories. Throughout 2017, Glen Burtnik’s Summer of Love Concert will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love – 1967, focusing on musical highlights of that year (as well as great songs from 1968 and 1969), which unofficially kicked off with the release of The Beatles “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” plus the release of many seminal rock albums from The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones and The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Comprising of 12 or more performers including a horn section, strings, keyboardists, percussionists, background vocalists and an incredible rock rhythm section, The Summer of Love Concert recreates “note for note and absolutely live” the songs and the psychedelically flavored spirit of the Woodstock Generation. The songs run the gammet from the psychedelic songs to rockin’ album tracks to a sprinkling of now hip Top 40 pop from that era.

Born on June 25, 2003 on the island of Bali, pianist Joey Alexaner originally learned about jazz from his dad, who exposed his son to a variety of classic albums from his extensive collection. At the age of 6, Joey began teaching himself to play piano using a mini electronic keyboard given to him by his father. His musicianship and grasp of jazz fundamentals developed at a remarkable pace, and at age 8 UNESCO invited him to play solo piano for an elated Herbie Hancock during the piano great’s visit to Indonesia. At 9, he won the grand prize at the first Master-Jam Fest, an all-ages competition in Ukraine which included 200 competitors from 17 countries. By 10, he was performing at jazz festivals in both Jakarta and Copenhagen. An invitation from Wynton Marsalis led to his U.S. debut appearance at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall in 2014 where he amazed the audience with his musicality, followed by appearances before the Jazz Foundation of America at the Apollo and the Arthur Ashe Learning Center at Gotham Hall. Wishing to encourage the continued development of Joey’s prodigious playing, his parents sold the family business in Jakarta and relocated to the United States.

Joey experienced a major stroke of luck when he received an invitation from impresario George Wein to perform on two stages at the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival. Over the past two years Joey has been paying his dues and honing his craft: learning what it means to be a bandleader, keeping material fresh after repeated performances, and seeking out sidemen who are also collaborators. Along the way, The Joey Alexander Trio has performed at well-known venues and major festivals across the United States and around the globe.

His 2015 debut album for “Motéma Music, My Favorite Things,” garnered two Grammy Award nominations for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Improvised Solo for his performance of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps,” making him the youngest jazz artist ever nominated for a Grammy. His performances on the 58th Annual Grammy Awards broadcast received standing ovations from the star-studded audience, bringing his talent to the attention of music lovers everywhere, mesmerizing long-time industry professionals, and inspiring other young musicians to pursue their own dreams.

His sophomore album “Countdown” showcased Joey’s remarkable development as a contemporary jazz bandleader and promise as a composer. Now, as he enters his teen years, Joey takes another step in charting his artistic direction with the release of “Countdown.” Building upon the swing and improvisational style that made his first project a critical and popular success, “Countdown” is a reflection of the growth and maturity of Joey Alexander as an artist, and a confident next step toward a limitless future.

SHADES OF BUBLÉ: A Three-Man Tribute to Michael Bublé celebrates the continuing career of multiple Grammy Award-winning recording artist Michael Bublé by performing his incredible catalog of music while adding the sensational three-part harmony sound made popular by those famous “guy-groups” from the 1950s and ’60s. Since debuting at a sold-out concert in April 2015, this trio has entertained tens of thousands at theatrical concerts across the USA, gala events, and headline performances onboard luxury cruise ships.

Delivering a set list comprised only of songs recorded or performed live by Michael Bublé, this world-class act honors – but doesn’t imitate – the sophistication, retro style, and high-energy fun that Bublé himself brings to his concerts while engaging new fans with thrilling new vocal arrangements. Audiences worldwide have complimented the group’s professionalism, musicality, choreography, arrangements, and dashing good looks … but what engages concertgoers most is the fun, energy, and excitement that gets everyone clapping and singing along to their favorite songs.
